Job Description

Senior Editor, Public Interest GRFX

Organization:

The Public Interest Network includes U.S. PIRG, Environment America, Green Corps and other organizations that engage in advocacy and grassroots organizing to win positive changes for our environment and our society. Right now, for example, we’re tackling Wall Street reform, clean energy and global warming, healthy food and sustainable agriculture, among other issues.

Public Interest GRFX is the in-house communications team for the Public Interest Network. Our mission is to help our network of advocacy groups build a larger and more deeply engaged following for their work. By writing and editing text, designing publications and online content, building Websites, and producing video content, we aim to help our network engage the public, win hearts and minds, raise funds and organize grassroots action.

The job:

As senior editor, your job is to help train and guide the writers and editors on the GRFX team. You’ll help them figure out where people are at on an issue, then help them craft a story and message that will inspire members and activists to, for example, email the governor on clean energy or write a check in support of a healthy food campaign.

You’ll teach the writers the principles that will help them become more effective communicators. You’ll help them set clear goals and employ smart strategies to achieve them. You’ll give them constructive feedback on their drafts. And, when necessary, you’ll step in and write an email alert, a fundraising appeal, a newsletter or an annual report that help set a high standard for the rest of our team.

Training
For the first 3-6 months in the job, you’ll work with the team’s communications director to learn how we approach each of our core projects: campaign packages, direct mail appeals, email alerts and appeals, Web-based campaign content, newsletters and annual reports.

Location
Boston, MA (downtown)

Requirements
You must be motivated to make political and social change and have the kind of drive and strategic sense it takes to make an impact.

You must be willing to work hard. This is more than a 9 to 5 job. We deliver what we promise and take the time to do it right.

You must have at least two years of writing or editing experience. You must also have some experience, whether professional or volunteer, working for an issue or a cause you believe in.

You must be able to find creative solutions to tough problems, communicate effectively with a wide range of people, pay attention to detail, and motivate others to achieve more than they thought possible. Experience in other leadership, management or training positions is a plus.

Salary & Benefits
Your salary will depend upon your professional experience and its relevance to the senior editor position. We offer a competitive benefits package, including a group health plan, educational loan assistance, a retirement plan, and paid vacation and sick days. We also offer opportunities for travel, additional training and advancement.
