With an experienced network of researchers, advocates, organizers and volunteers across the state, we stand up to powerful interests on issues to make health care affordable, protect consumers from marketplace abuses, fight political corruption, and boost civic participation.

CALPIRG is part of a national network of non-profits known as The Public Interest Network, which also includes Environment California, Green Corps, and Pesticide Watch.

Job Description

Responsibilities of the administrator will include:

Office and personnel administration: CALPIRG shares three office spaces with Environment California in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The Administrator will ensure that the offices have the materials and supplies necessary to run our organization, good files are kept of organizational documents in one of the main offices, and that proper security protocols are followed. The administrator will also administer our group health insurance plan for our staff.

Communication with our boards, foundation supporters, and other allies: Work with staff to manage our contact lists for allies, and help implement regular communication with our foundation supporters and allies. Help set up Board of Directors meetings as needed.

Grassroots fundraising: CALPIRG depends on the support of a broad membership base. The administrator will help to build to educate the public, raise funds, and build that broad membership base by canvassing one day a week in a local office, and assisting the directors of one of our citizen outreach offices for a few weeks each year at the peak of their busy season.

Communication with our membership base: Help pull together and send out regular communication to some of our organizations’ top contributors. Respond to requests from members by phone and email.

Student Chapter administrative support: CALPIRG Students is the student-funded and directed arm of CALPIRG, supported by 30,000 college students. We’re able to hire staff to work directly on college campuses, with students, to run campaigns on a variety of issues. The Administrator will work with CALPIRG Students’ organizing team to help manage that list of student supporters, and stay in close communication with the campus administration.

Internal staff meetings and retreats: Handle the logistics for four statewide staff meetings and retreats each year.

Special Events: CALPIRG is currently planning a 40th Anniversary celebration in 2012. The Administrator will work with the State Director on some of the logistics and planning of that event.

As noted, many of the job responsibilities will be specific to CALPIRG, but the administrator will also provide some organizational support to other non-profits in The Public Interest Network, especially Environment California.

Qualifications

CALPIRG is seeking an administrator with a strong commitment to the public interest and a desire to work in the non-profit field; the ambition and ability to take broad responsibility for an entire organization; an attention to detail and organization skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously; strong problem solving skills; strong written and verbal skills; and, experience using Word, Excel, Outlook and other computer programs.

Salary & Benefits

The California administrator will earn a salary of $33,400. CALPIRG entry-level staff can opt into our health care plan, and are eligible for paid sick days, holidays, and two weeks of paid vacation. After one year of work, CALPIRG staff are also eligible to join our 401(k) plan.
